カリストガ (Calistoga)

恥ずかしいことに、「カリストガ」という街があるとは知らなかった。以前カリフォルニアにしばらく住んでいたのに。。。一昔前、スーパーでよく見かけるペットボトル水のブランド名だったので、漠然と水のイメージしかなかった。同窓生と今来ているのだが、サンフランシスコの北にある街で温泉が出る。 (It’s embarrassing that I didn’t know “Calistoga” was a town despite living in California for some years in the past. I only associated the name with the water bottles. I’m here now with my school friends. It’s located north of San Francisco and offers natural hot springs.)

温泉プール。温度は37度くらいで、お風呂気分。夜、浮き輪ベッドにのって漂浪してると眠ってしまいそうになる。「プールがあるから水着持ってこい」と言われて、張り切ってスイムキャップとゴーグルまで持ってきたが、泳ぐでなく浮くプールだった！ (A hot spring pool. The temperature is around 98F, just like a hot bath. Being on a lounge floater in the evening, I caught myself falling asleep a few times. I was told that there is a pool and to bring the bathing suit, so I came here armed with a swim cap and goggles as well. It turned out to be a “floating” pool, not a swimming pool!)

プールの横で、こうやって常に水蒸気が噴出している。 (Next to the pool, the geyser shoots hot water steam constantly.)

椰子の木、遠くに山。カリフォルニアだなあ。この辺も何度か山火事が近づき、怖かったらしい。 (Palm trees, mountains in the distance… It’s so California. The fire had come so close and threatened this area several times.)
